What is Buscopan and when is it used?
Buscopan cramp tablets are used to relieve colicky abdominal pain that is caused by painful spasms in the muscles of the gastrointestinal (GI) or Genito-urinary (GU) tract. Hyoscine, the active ingredient works by relaxing the muscle that is found in the walls of the stomach, intestines, bowel, bile duct and urinary tract. This type of muscle is called smooth muscle or involuntary muscle.
How will it treat my symptoms?
Hyoscine stops the spasms in the smooth muscle by preventing acetylcholine from acting on the muscle. It does this by blocking the receptors on the muscle cells that the acetylcholine would normally act on.
Can I buy Buscopan Over the Counter?
Yes, you don’t need a prescription to buy this dose, some doses will require a prescription but this one does not. A pharmacist will need to ensure the treatment is suitable and safe for you.
What causes stomach cramps?
A stomach ache, including stomach cramps or abdominal pain, doesn’t usually last long and isn’t usually caused by anything serious. Some common causes of a stomach ache include: Trapped wind (flatulence) Pain or discomfort after eating Being unable to poo (constipation)

How many tablets do I take?
Take 2 tablets initially up to a maximum of 4 times a day (for 12 years and over). For children aged between 6 and 12 years of age it is advised they take 1 tablet up to a maximum of 3 times a day.
What is the difference between Buscopan IBS and Buscopan Cramps?
Both the IBS and cramp tablets have the same active ingredient hyoscine butylbromide. Buscopan IBS is formulated to treat medically diagnosed IBS and the dosage is made up to treat mild to severe bouts. Buscopan Cramps comes with a fixed dosage that is used to treat stomach and abdominal cramps.
Does Buscopan Cramps relieve menstrual cramps?
Yes. Buscopan Cramps can be used to provide relief from menstrual cramps, however, if your symptoms persist or worsen then you should seek medical advice from a healthcare professional.
Can I take Buscopan Cramps if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. You should not take Buscopan Cramps if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor if you are suffering from IBS symptoms.
