Mounjaro (Tirzeptide) Injection
Weight Loss
Overview
NOTE: You must complete a short assessment so we can make sure the medication for this condition is suitable for you.
Mounjaro is a weekly injectable pen used to aid weight loss. It contains tirzepatide, which helps regulate blood sugar and energy levels, leading to reduced appetite and fewer cravings.
Mounjaro is only for adults with obesity (BMI of 30 or greater) or overweight (BMI of 27 or greater) who also have weight-related health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or high cholesterol.
How it works
Mounjaro's active ingredient is tirzepatide, a unique combination that targets two key hormones: GLP-1 and GIP.
GLP-1 is well-known for helping regulate blood sugar levels. It also signals your brain to reduce hunger, slows down digestion, and increases feelings of fullness.
GIP works alongside GLP-1 to balance energy levels in your body. Together, they help enhance appetite control and blood sugar management.
By mimicking these natural hormones, Mounjaro offers a powerful approach to weight loss compared to treatments that only focus on GLP-1.
The Dosing
To optimize your treatment and achieve long-term results, it's important to gradually increase your Mounjaro dosage. You'll typically start with a 2.5mg dose and increase it every four weeks (or as advised by our clinicians) until you reach your target dose of 5mg, 10mg, or 15mg.

How much weight have adults lost taking Mounjaro?
Mounjaro can be a valuable tool for weight loss. When combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise, clinical trials have shown that patients can lose at least 20% of their body weight in 18 months.
What are the main side effects of Mounjaro?
Mounjaro can cause side effects.
- Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation, often more noticeable when starting or increasing your dose. Other common side effects may include fatigue, dizziness, bloating, gallstones, heartburn, injection site reactions, hair loss, and low blood sugar (in people with type 2 diabetes).
- Serious side effects are rare but important to know. Pancreatitis, with symptoms of severe abdominal pain and persistent vomiting, requires immediate medical attention. Allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), characterized by difficulty breathing, facial swelling, and swallowing, are also serious and need urgent medical help.
Always read the Patient Information Leaflet for complete details on side effects and how to use MounjaroWhat else should I know about Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is suitable for adults with:
- A BMI of 30 or over (obesity)
- A BMI of 27 or over (overweight) and at least one weight-related health issue like prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart problems.
Mounjaro is not suitable if you are:
- Pregnant or planning to become pregnant (stop Mounjaro at least one month before trying to conceive)

How can I manage the side effects of Mounjaro?
Most Mounjaro side effects are mild and often improve over time.
To help manage common discomforts:
- Consistency is key: Inject Mounjaro at the same time each week for a more consistent experience.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially if you experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Eating smaller meals more frequently can also help.
- Relieve constipation: Increase fiber intake, stay hydrated, and enjoy gentle exercise like walking. Fruits like prunes, figs, and grapes can also aid digestion.
- Soothe headaches: Relax in a quiet space, take over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol, stay hydrated, and try relaxation techniques like meditation or scalp massage.
Remember, everyone's experience is different. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.
Where do I inject Mounjaro?
For best results, inject Mounjaro into areas with more fat:
- Abdomen (at least 5cm from your belly button)
- Front of your thighs
- Upper arms
Remember to rotate injection sites within the same area to prevent skin irritation.
How soon does Mounjaro start working?
While Mounjaro starts working immediately, it may take several weeks to noticeably impact blood sugar levels, appetite, and eating habits.
Can I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?
If you're currently using Saxenda or Wegovy, you'll need a one-month "washout period" before starting Mounjaro. This allows your body to clear the previous medication. All new Mounjaro patients begin with a 2.5mg dose.
Please note: Even if you're using another weight loss medication, Mounjaro might not be suitable for you. A consultation will determine if it's the right choice.
Which treatment should i choose, Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Wegovy and Mounjaro are both weekly injection pens and work in similar ways to aid weight loss. Mounjaro has proven more effective in clinical trials, as it works on GLP-1 and GIP hormones, whereas Wegovy only works on GLP-1. However, Mounjaro is a new medicine in the UK so we don’t have as much safety data on it compared to other medicines in the long term. Deciding if or which medicine is right for you will depend on different factors, which we’ll assess during your consultation. If you’re already on Wegovy (or Saxenda) and losing weight, we recommend you keep using it. Keep in mind, weight plateaus are normal on your weight loss journey.
