Finasteride Tablets
Hair Loss
Overview
NOTE: You must complete a short assessment so we can make sure the medication for this condition is suitable for you.
What is Finasteride?
Finasteride is the generic version of Propecia and is used to treat male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss, affecting two-thirds of men before the age of 35, and is treatable in 95% of cases. Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone, which leads to increased hair growth on the scalp and slower hair loss. For optimal effect, Finasteride should be taken once a day for 3 to 6 months. This treatment is available in 1mg tablets.
FAQ
What is Finasteride
finasteride is a prescription-only treatment. It’s not available on the NHS so you need a private prescription. Alternatively, you can make a private appointment with your GP. We can also generate this at no extra cost when you complete your online assessment, and pay for your treatment. It is only suitable for men and should never be taken by women.
How to take Finasteride
You take one tablet once a day, with or without food.
How effective is Finasteride
9 out of 10 men notice improvements in their hair loss and most men stop losing their hair, and some will also see regrowth of hair. Studies were made in men aged 18-41 with mild to moderate hair loss. On stopping Propecia, hair loss will usually resume after six to twelve months.
How does Finasteride work?
Propecia blocks the action of 5α-reductase, a hormone that affects hair growth in men.
How long does Finasteride take to work?
Due to the hair growth cycle, it generally takes 3-6 months for you to see the benefits of Propecia. If you have not noticed any effect over this time, you should stop taking the medication.
What are the side effects of Finasteride?
Side effects are uncommon and usually mild, but sometimes Finasteride can cause skin rashes. A concern for many men is that it can reduce sex drive and cause erection problems. Around 1.5% of men are affected by these side effects, which, in very rare cases, can continue to cause problems after stopping the medication.
What's the difference between Finasteride and Propecia
Medically, Propecia and Finasteride (or ‘Generic Propecia’), are equivalent. They both contain the active ingredient Finasteride 1mg.
Will Finasteride help an area of complete baldness?
No. Finasteride will only be effective on areas of the scalp that still have some hair growth. Finasteride will not regrow hair on completely bald areas.
Is Finasteride (Propecia) expensive?
Propecia is an expensive treatment, as it was the first highly effective treatment to market for male pattern baldness. Generic Propecia is now available as Finasteride 1mg, and has significantly reduced the cost of taking this medication long term.
